On the minimal polynomial of Gauss periods for prime powers
For a positive integer m, set ζm = exp(2πi/m) and let Z ∗ m denote the group of reduced residues modulo m. Fix a congruence group H of conductor m and of order f . Choose integers t1, . . . , te to represent the e = φ(m)/f cosets of H in Zm. The Gauss periods θj = ∑ x∈H ζ tjx m (1 ≤ j ≤ e) corresponding toH are conjugate and distinct over Q with minimal polynomial g(x) = x + c1x e−1 + · · ·+ ce...
متن کاملOn a Congruence Modulo n Involving Two Consecutive Sums of Powers
For various positive integers k, the sums of kth powers of the first n positive integers, Sk(n) := 1 k+2k+ · · ·+nk, are some of the most popular sums in all of mathematics. In this note we prove a congruence modulo n3 involving two consecutive sums S2k(n) and S2k+1(n). This congruence allows us to establish an equivalent formulation of Giuga’s conjecture. Moreover, if k is even and n ≥ 5 is a ...
متن کاملGauss Sums and Kloosterman Sums over Residue Rings of Algebraic Integers
Let O denote the ring of integers of an algebraic number field of degree m which is totally and tamely ramified at the prime p. Write ζq = exp(2πi/q), where q = pr. We evaluate the twisted Kloosterman sum ∑ α∈(O/qO)∗ χ(N(α))ζ T (α)+z/N(α) q , where T and N denote trace and norm, and where χ is a Dirichlet character (mod q). This extends results of Salié for m = 1 and of Yangbo Ye for prime m di...
متن کاملBinomial Character Sums modulo Prime Powers
We show that the binomial and related multiplicative character sums p ∑ x=1 (x,p)=1 χ(x(Ax +B)), p ∑ x=1 χ1(x)χ2(Ax k +B), have a simple evaluation for large enough m (for m ≥ 2 if p ABk).
متن کاملWhittaker Coefficients of Metaplectic Eisenstein Series
We study Whittaker coefficients for maximal parabolic Eisenstein series on metaplectic covers of split reductive groups. By the theory of Eisenstein series these coefficients have meromorphic continuation and functional equation. However they are not Eulerian and the standard methods to compute them in the reductive case do not apply to covers. For “cominuscule” maximal parabolics, we give an e...
